Volkswagen is giving its new electric city car a familiar name: the ID.2all concept will go into production in 2026 as the ID. Polo. The starting price will be less than €25,000. Volkswagen is convinced that many people immediately associate the familiar name with quality, safety, and everyday practicality.
Old names, new drive – a strategy with recognition value
VW is saying goodbye to cool number sequences such as ID.3 or ID.4. Instead, electric cars will be given familiar model names – such as Polo, Golf, Tiguan, or Passat – which will be combined with electric technology. This deliberately creates emotional brand images such as the ID. Polo or, later, the ID. Polo GTI.
Key technical data for the ID. Polo
The ID. Polo is based on the MEB Entry platform, is front-wheel drive, and offers two battery options. It has a range of up to 280 miles (approx. 450 km). It also comes in four performance levels – including the sporty ID. Polo GTI – and features CCS fast charging.
First appearances and market launch of the ID. Polo
The still-camouflaged ID. Polo and its GTI variant are making their debut these days at the IAA Mobility 2025 in Munich. Production is expected to begin in fall 2026, with a Europe-wide market launch to follow shortly thereafter.
Future prospects – names remain, technology emerges
VW promises to bring more classic names into the electric world: for example, the ID. Golf (instead of ID.3), ID. Tiguan (instead of ID.4) or ID. Passat (instead of ID.7) could follow – alongside the existing combustion and hybrid models.
