ID. Polo with 37 kWh battery targets urban traffic
Volkswagen deliberately places the variant below the version with 52 kWh, which buyers can already order. This smaller battery follows the larger version to market by a few weeks. Entry starts with the Trend line, because it costs CHF 24,900. Buyers who want more equipment choose Life or Style from CHF 30,300. Volkswagen also offers two power levels, namely 85 kW with 116 hp and 99 kW with 135 hp. Both levels are available to order now.
334 km range and charging in 23 minutes
The range of up to 334 km comes from the WLTP cycle. It therefore counts as a laboratory value. In daily use this figure drops depending on temperature, speed and driving profile. Volkswagen therefore designs the variant explicitly for city traffic and commuter routes. At a direct current charger the small car draws up to 90 kW. The jump from 10 to 80 per cent takes around 23 minutes. This function already belongs to the standard equipment of the base version. The affordable variant therefore remains usable on longer stages as well.
Three trim lines for the electric small car
The Trend line delivers LED headlights, a high beam assistant and automatic climate control. Also on board are the lane keeping assistant with Emergency Assist and Side Assist. The digital cockpit measures 10 inches, and the Innovision infotainment system shows 13 inches. The Life line adds adaptive cruise control, a rear view camera and a junction assistant. App Connect, voice control and inductive smartphone charging come in addition. The Style top version arrives with IQ.LIGHT LED matrix headlights and an illuminated light strip. It also receives sport comfort seats, ambient lighting and two zone automatic climate control. The ID. Light strip newly continues into the front doors for the first time. The system therefore warns of approaching road users before anyone opens the door.
Optional extras from higher vehicle classes
Volkswagen offers options for the ID. Polo that remain rare in the small car segment. These include a Harman Kardon sound system with 425 watts and ten speakers. A panoramic glass roof is also available. Electrically adjustable front seats with twelve ways and a pneumatic massage function complete the offer. Such equipment pushes the boundary between small and compact cars further upwards.
Electric Urban Car Family collects 70,000 orders
The ID. Polo belongs to the Electric Urban Car Family of Brand Group Core. This family also includes the ID. Cross, the CUPRA Raval and the Škoda Epiq. Volkswagen reports more than 70,000 orders worldwide for these model lines, according to its own figures. Of these, 25,000 orders go to the ID. Polo. These figures come from the manufacturer, and independent registration data are not yet available.
ID. Polo GTI tops the model range
At the top the ID. Polo GTI completes the model range. The first fully electric GTI produces 226 hp and reaches 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds. Its 52 kWh battery allows up to 424 km, and the price sits just below CHF 40,000. Around CHF 15,000 therefore separate the entry model and the sports version.
Assessing the entry price in the Swiss market
The price of CHF 24,900 marks a new benchmark in the Swiss electric offering. Buyers receive a noticeably smaller battery in return, however. Anyone who regularly drives long distances should therefore examine the 52 kWh version. For urban daily use and for second cars the affordable variant looks convincing. Whether the price holds in the market will become clear in the coming months.
