Scania is focusing on electric and natural gas vehicles at IAA Transportation 2026. The trade show will take place in Hanover from September 15 to 20, 2026. Scania will occupy Hall 12 at Booth C60 as well as outdoor area R64. In addition, there will be a Test & Drive area in Halls 14 and 15. The booth’s motto is “Meet your Perfect Match.” Scania Switzerland AG will have a four-person team on site from Tuesday through Saturday, as Scania Switzerland announced in a newsletter.
Exhibition Space and Vehicles in Hanover
The list of vehicles is more revealing than the slogan. Seven vehicles will be on display in the outdoor area. These include a Scania BEV 30 P with a roofer’s crane and a BEV 40 R with a swap body.
The selection is rounded out by an S 460 natural gas truck and a Super 390 G. Also on display are a V8 NewLongline 770 S, a special “Red Pearl” model, and an Irizar i6S tour bus.
Four vehicles are available in the Test & Drive area. Two of them are battery-electric: the BEV 36 R XT and the BEV 40 R. The lineup also includes the Super 390 G and the Super 500 R.
Electric Trucks as Work Vehicles
This is the real news. The two electric trucks in the outdoor area are not concept studies.
A roofing crane and a swap body are body types designed for everyday use. They are intended for construction, distribution, and waste management. It is precisely in these applications that electric powertrains perform best today.
The reason is operational. Such vehicles follow predictable routes that return to the depot. They charge overnight at their own charging points. They have little need for public fast-charging infrastructure.
However, the bodywork presents a challenge. A crane adds weight and places demands on auxiliary drives. Electric auxiliary drives are an advantage here because no engine needs to run idling.
This shifts the focus. A few years ago, manufacturers showcased electric trucks as tractor units for long-haul transport. Today, they’re showcasing body-equipped vehicles for local operations.
Test drives bring the electric drivetrain to life
The mix at Test & Drive is also noteworthy. Half of the test vehicles are electric.
This is more than just symbolic. After all, handling and operation are key factors when it comes to trucks. Dispatchers and drivers assess a vehicle differently after driving it than after simply looking at it.
For fleet managers, this opportunity is therefore invaluable. They can directly compare diesel and electric vehicles.
Gas remains part of the lineup
The S 460 gas-powered truck deserves a mention. Several manufacturers have scaled back their gas strategies.
Scania is sticking with it. The reason lies in the application. Powered by biomethane, gas-powered vehicles significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They’re also suitable for long distances without refueling stops.
In Switzerland, this remains a niche market. The refueling network for liquefied natural gas is sparse. For certain fleets with their own refueling facilities, however, the technology can still be cost-effective.
Two contrasting trade show strategies in the same week
A comparison with a competitor is illuminating. In August, IVECO announced a roadshow across five European countries. The manufacturer is bringing its vehicles to customers rather than to the trade show booth. Scania takes the opposite approach. The manufacturer is occupying three exhibition spaces in Hanover and hosting a stage program.
Both approaches make sense. A roadshow reaches customers regionally and in a targeted manner. A leading trade show, on the other hand, brings together industry professionals, the media, and suppliers in one place. For the industry, the question remains open. Whether the IAA Transportation retains its role as the leading trade show will be determined by decisions like these.
On-Site Swiss Support in Hanover
Scania Switzerland AG is supporting customers in Hanover with two teams. Martin Stamm and Patrick Weber will be on site from September 15 to 17. Bernhard Huber and Thomas Rölli will take over from September 17 to 19. There is no separate Swiss booth, as smaller markets are also served at the corporate booth. As a national alternative for Swiss customers, there is transport-CH in Bern next year.
Analysis of the Swiss Commercial Vehicle and Transportation Market
Scania’s trade show presence confirms a continuation of its current course rather than a shift. Scania remains open to all technologies. Diesel, gas, and electric powertrains coexist, and Scania is also continuing to pursue hydrogen technology.
This makes sense for fleet operators. After all, no single powertrain suits every application today. A long-haul truck has different requirements than a local-service crane truck. The more interesting observation is the normalization of electric trucks. They are presented as working vehicles with bodywork, not as showpieces. This reflects the current state of the Swiss market.
