IVECO and PlusAI bring Level 4 autonomous trucks onto the road

Artificial Intelligence in the cab

IVECO, the brand of Iveco Group N.V. for light, medium, and heavy commercial vehicles, announces together with the long-standing technology partner PlusAI the launch of a new Level 4 autonomous driving program. Real tests are to be conducted on a roughly 300-kilometer freight route in Spain later this year.
IVECO
THE KEY POINTS IN BRIEF
• IVECO and PlusAI are jointly developing Level 4 autonomous heavy-duty vehicles for use in European freight transport.
• Starting in 2026, two autonomous IVECO S-Way trucks will be tested on a roughly 300-kilometer freight route in Spain, in collaboration with Sesé.
• The project strengthens safety, efficiency, and sustainability in road freight transport and aims to underscore the technology strategy of the Iveco Group.

IVECO, the brand of Iveco Group N.V., and PlusAI, a globally operating company for AI-based virtual driver software for autonomous trucks, plan the first deployment of heavy-duty vehicles with Level 4 Autonomous Driving Systems (ADS) in Southern Europe, in collaboration with the Spanish logistics company Sesé and the Government of Aragon, Spain.

Tests designed for several years

Within the program, IVECO and PlusAI will develop two heavy-duty trucks equipped with Level 4 autonomous driving functions and controlled by the virtual driver PlusAI SuperDrive. The autonomous trucks will be tested for several years starting from 2026 – throughout the entire testing phase with a safety driver on board. These IVECO S‑Way heavy-duty vehicles are intended to be used autonomously on freight routes for the logistics company Sesé, particularly between Madrid and Zaragoza, the capital of the Aragon region, on a roughly 300-kilometer (184-mile) long transport corridor.

Bringing vehicle automation forward

Marco Liccardo, Chief Technology & Digital Officer of the Iveco Group, explains:
“Vehicle automation is a central pillar of the Iveco Group’s technology strategy. We are delighted to further strengthen our strong partnership with PlusAI to further develop our ADAS and ADS technologies in IVECO trucks. This project will advance us on our path to offering our customers top-notch technologies for increasingly sustainable transport.”

Shawn Kerrigan, COO and co-founder of PlusAI, adds: “Autonomous commercial vehicles are a transformative technology that can significantly improve traffic safety and can reshape commercial goods transport worldwide. We are proud to expand our partnership with IVECO to autonomous truck operations at level 4 in Germany and Spain. Together with Sesé, we demonstrate how autonomous driving technology can improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of heavy-duty transport while also strengthening the competitiveness of European supply chains.”

Iveco Group N.V. (EXM: IVG) unites forward-looking people and brands that support companies and missions in advancing a more sustainable society. The company’s seven brands are each leaders in their respective fields: IVECO, a pioneering brand for commercial vehicles, which designs, produces, and markets heavy, medium, and light commercial vehicles; FPT Industrial, a global leader in modern powertrain technologies in the fields of agriculture, construction, marine, power generation, and commercial vehicles; IVECO BUS and HEULIEZ, brands for mass transportation as well as premium buses and touring coaches; IDV, specialized in military and civil protection vehicles; ASTRA, leading in heavy-duty vehicles for quarries and large construction sites; IVECO CAPITAL, the financing organization that supports all brands.

The Iveco Group employs 36,000 people worldwide and has 19 production sites and 30 research and development centers.
